Penumbra

Penumbra

written by: Allan Edward Tierney

Long lakes of shadows lie,
not quite black
the friendly forest around me,
gathering folds of dusk
the birds grow quiet,
fluffing feathers for sleep
black shapes trundle home,
unseen in the deep

The hills are coated in the last
amber rays,
soft as felt in the growing dark
retreating light leaves
the fields to rest
and I wander the paths between,
homeward my quest

The world folds around itself
in a protective pose
it is time to find serenity,
to let all ambition cease
and nurturing sleep hold sway
to build our energies deep inside
for the approaching day.
