Perfidious Devils

Humans think us perfidious. I think us as patient and persistent. Scampering upon the earth with gently ticking feet, we crawl upon the silken strands of our webs; created with such delicate care, ever the artist. As architects of a world beyond our own, we are spiders, spinning our destinies with each delicate strand.

Yet we are misunderstood, judged and feared.

One of the smallest creatures, we are capable of creating something so intricate and beautiful; our webs a masterpiece of art to deceive, to ensure, and to capture. That is the power and beauty of who we are.

Be it of life or of death, we are the weavers of dreams.

Are we the villains in this story? Our silks made with such purpose, so that others may be ensnared in our grasp. We are not villains; simply misunderstood when in reality, we are only trying to survive.

Upon her web of silver strands sits the huntress – my mother. She says I’m lucky. Many others fly off on strands of spider silk to fend for themselves. Mother assures me she would never leave me alone like the others.

Only that was a lie. One day, the human found our secret hide-out, and the darkened corner of a bookshelf burned with such luminosity that it blinded us. Mother protected me, crawling forward just as the burly human reached its gruesome hand towards us.

Describing the capture as a black hole of darkness engulfing her, a sudden bright light setting her free. She found herself in a different place filled with sharp blades of grass and other small creatures.

Soon after, we moved. Vacated to the other side of the house and made a home in a small hole at the bottom of a brick wall. No human, small or large, could reach in to grab us.

We only want peace. We are not the villains, nor are we the heroes. We just want to co-exist and live our lives in serenity. Perhaps we need to keep more of a low profile, or perhaps the humans need to learn compassion and empathy towards the very creatures who create such a small world that humans can’t comprehend.
