Spotlight On Writers

  1. Where do you originate from?

I was born in China but adopted when I was a year old and have lived in the beautiful state of Vermont ever since. We celebrate Gotcha Day every year; the day I was adopted. It’s our own little family holiday. I credit my family and environment for my unwavering values and beliefs. The stability has allowed me to take risks I never thought I’d take, like running my own small art business.

  1. What do you cherish most about the place you call home?

I love to brag that Vermont gets more than 4 seasons (stick season and mud season). We get everything Nature has to offer. I love each season for a different reason, and it can alleviate environmental fatigue. I will say though that winter is my favorite season, and one of the reasons I wouldn’t move to a warmer state. I love the deep snow, freshly chopped wood in the garage (cut by Yours Truly), and Lake Champlain hot chocolate!

  1. What ignites your creativity?

I get my inspiration from a variety of sources. Dreams, daydreams, movies, documentaries. One of the flash fictions I have on Spillwords is based on an episode of a favorite tv series, Expedition X. Sometimes it can just be a fleeting moment, that otherwise may go unnoticed, and I’ll feel the urge to write a whole short story around it. It’s a wonderful feeling. My cure for artist’s block is watching animators work on their own pieces. For some reason, seeing other people work in my favorite genre of film always lifts me out of the lows.

  1. Do you have a favorite word and could you incorporate it into a poetic phrase?

My favorite word is Fierce – my poetry is a little rocky but here goes:

Hear her voice now, fierce and silver like thunder in July
A battlecry to her sisters that shake the storms to release its rain
There is glass above to be shattered and Him to stomp beneath

  1. What is your pet peeve?

In writing or in general? In writing, it’s not capitalizing names or the first word of a sentence. Even when it’s intentional like the end credits of some movies, as the credits scroll by, it absolutely bothers me. In general, (my mom’s going to kill me for this) but it’s humming. My mom hums incessantly and it drills a hole in my focus. It’s a love-hate relationship; love my mom, hate the humming.

  1. How would you describe the essence of Rae S. Earley?

I create worlds too big to put down on paper and characters too complex to fit on one page. I don’t take up space, I take in space. I may be quiet and introverted, but once I feel comfortable with you, you see a side of me I don’t show to just anyone. I’m intense about my passions, and not afraid of confrontation. I don’t stay silent in the presence of bullies, and regularly flex ethics and philosophy scenarios in my head. I love a mental challenge (as long as it’s not math) and look forward to exploring my own personal afterworld with all my characters and dreamscapes in the next life.
