Shady Street

A finger of moonlight pokes through furtive clouds,
I tread the street stiffly,
click-clacking claret shoes,
up down, up down.
Another John,
car door squeaks open,
he’s a regular…
Prancing, panting,
until no pants left.
Short breaths, then…
a duet of lungs wheeze.
I walk crippled Shady Street,
caustic cobbles, a black brick road.
Iced jaws of Winter pierce
withering, shivering bones.
Visible puffs of exhalation
join cutting, stabbing air.
Flashing fragments of snow
morph into ivory confetti,
memories of time-banished fate.
Visit devils every night…
another Night Crawler
treading avenues of depravity
‘Twenty quid for business!’
‘Too much slag! Get in!’
Next! Hair pulled, roots out.
Company GTI speeds us away.
Impatient man becomes beast.
One hand driving…
other intermittently fist-kisses my closed mouth, cheeks aflame
as if some sky of scarlet dream shone through
alcohol haze, zips zzzzp…
Back alley, serviced it well.
Seedy cul-de-sac narrows step-by-step.
Stiletto heels, plonk places,
await punters cruise.
Red car…matches
red coat, red shoes, red thighs.
Lamppost leaning towards
a new John, mortared face.
My smile is glass.
Smothers me, mouth,
neck, breasts.
Breath perfumed with whiskey-cheese,
whiffs of sewage stink.
Indents of lust, every thrust taunts
where black dances like a night chant.
His eyes explode with satisfaction.
I am quiet, as a sparrow’s sigh.
Sprinkle fearful sweat,
warped feelings knit
in angered atmosphere…
Clenched knuckles,
nails dig palms,
laddered legs painfully pound.
Quarter moon,
edge, razor blade sharp,
a precise needlepoint.
My screams hide against
dampened doors.
Corner shop loot
for cost of Toot.
Collapsed veins,
insistent, starving tape-worms,
slither my forearms,
craving a smack hit.
Traumatised butterfly tattoo…
regresses to pupa.
A two-colour world,
black stars,
sickly grey hazes wrap their crust.
No taste of freedom on my tongue.
No daisies, just dog shit.
No Surfinas, just spit.
Wrenched from my own personality,
watching the whole façade from another place
I am angry. Flakes turn to sleet,
but I can’t argue with sleet.
Sorrow, my illegitimate sister,
suicide, a long shadow.
Life, drained through a sieve…
remnants…
broken bones
fractured heart.
My visage, an unfinished
portrait of pain.
