Jamie B
- Where do you originate from?
I grew up in Hemsworth, a small old mining town in West Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
It was a close-knit community where neighbours would leave their doors unlocked and where the kids could leave the house early morning and return home from their adventures before it got dark. It was a town where everyone knew everyone, and it was a special place to grow up, where you were safe. That’s where my imagination began making games up with friends and being in the outdoors on the fields, and basically dreaming of the future and what life would hold for us all. This was the place my imagination could run wild.
- What do you cherish most about the place you call home?
The warm feeling of being welcomed back to my hometown, the familiar faces from my past, a warm reminder of what used to be. How everyone greets you with a hello or a short conversation, the people are never too busy to stop and have a chat. Also, I cherish that all my good memories are in the place where I call home. When I was young, it was my father who first introduced me to poetry, reading it to me on warm summer nights and explaining the poems in detail, especially poems from Robert Burns and William Butler Yeats, which I much enjoyed then and still do today.
- What ignites your creativity?
Nature: The beauty, chaos, and serenity of the natural world can stimulate my senses and ideas.
Emotions: Love, grief, wonder, and vulnerability often serve as powerful catalysts for my creative expression.
Stories and art, reading books, watching films, or experiencing art open new perspectives and fuel my imagination.
Personal Experiences: My own life—moments of joy, struggle, or change.
Dreams and Imagination: The surreal landscapes of my subconscious can lead to unique ideas and visions.
- Do you have a favorite word, and could you incorporate it into a poetic phrase?
Serene
He found a serene stillness within, a calm that held the chaos at bay.
- What is your pet peeve?
It used to be rude people, and now I see a rude person or experience rudeness, I try to observe closely and use that in my writing. Punctuality, I believe, if you are early, you’re on time, if you are on time, you are late, if you are late, that’s unacceptable. Also, in my writing, it’s when I have an amazing idea and it just doesn’t flow from my mind onto paper that’s frustrating. I have a thousand stories and poems in my mind, and they just don’t seem to articulate onto paper. Also, when I send you guys a poem at Spillwords and I believe that’s my best one yet, and it doesn’t get published, when other poems I feel are not that strong get published.
- How would you describe the essence of Jamie B?
I carry a quiet conviction to lift those who have fallen behind. Whether it’s offering a listening ear, a helping hand, or simply standing beside them in silence, I believe in the power of compassion. The pain of the downtrodden echoes in my heart, fueling my resolve to make a difference, no matter how small. I see their struggles not as burdens to bear alone, but as calls to action—reminders that kindness and understanding can light the way through darkness. In every act of support, I find a reflection of my humanity and a hope that together, we can forge a path toward dignity and hope.
