  1. Where do you originate from?

I’ve lived everywhere from Maryland to Louisiana, and up to Washington State and even Canada. Lately I’m calling North Carolina home. I guess this traveling lifestyle is why I’ve been told I have such a weird, hard-to-place accent.

  1. What do you cherish most about the place you call home?

My hometown is close to my sons and grandson, and that’s a joy. The neighborhood where I take my daily walks is filled with friendly, kind people and this is a balm to my soul on tough days.

  1. What ignites your creativity?

There’s a fire that comes from striking intense emotions against a restless mind. I live, and work right in the middle of that blaze. I feel like I’m always processing, and the challenge becomes balancing the desire to create with the need for calm. I don’t think my creativity has an off switch, though sometimes it stalls.

  1. Do you have a favorite word and could you incorporate it into a poetic phrase?

My favorite word of late is dazzling. It’s sort of a seasonal, linguistic, pumpkin spice.

Think of what it means to revel in the dazzling light of an autumn afternoon, knowing the darkness of winter is creeping forward.

  1. What is your pet peeve?

Speeding and reckless drivers make me bonkers. How can they have so little respect for the lives of others, or their own lives?

  1. How would you describe the essence of Karen Southall Watts?

I’m all about the search. Every day I get up looking for inspiration, meaning, connection, or perhaps just the perfect cup of tea. Happiness and contentment, when they come, never erase my openness to what’s undiscovered. In many ways, I live a life of longing, dotted with moments of quiet bliss.
