Tears

Tears are not just drops of water. Tears are joy, grief and fear.

When a child is born to a couple after years of their marriage, tears symbolize joy. When an athlete stands victorious after years of struggle, tears express joy. When a lover meets his/her beloved after a painful separation, tears reflect joy.

The same drops of water that express joy stand for grief too.

A young man sheds tears at the loss of his beloved. That’s grief. A studious student fails an exam despite great hard work, tears roll down his/her cheeks. That’s grief. A son sees his father dead. He doesn’t know of his own life ahead. Tears storm his eyes in a moment brief. That’s grief.

Tears may come out of a cruel man’s eyes as he sees the Death Angel. Fear. Tears may spill over a parent’s eyes if his/her child goes missing. Fear. Tears may flood out of a child’s eyes as he/she sees a stick. Fear.

But remember, it is not only the eyes that shed tears. Sometimes, the hearts do too. That’s a story for another day.
