That Poem for Her

That Poem for Her

written by: Wayne Russell

Had I not found you,
I shudder to think of
how empty and
meaningless life
would have been.

Had you not kissed
me, seated upon aging
park bench, lakeside; in
brilliance of day, best
day ever; at least one
of them;

I often think.

Had you not whispered
“yes” not once, but twice,
to my babbling nervous
proposal, in that little
cabin in the woods

I often think.

I often think what if, we
hadn’t been married in
that little church, in that
little college town, on
that perfect Summer’s day

I often think.

Had we not found one
another, I shudder to think
of how empty and
meaningless life
would have been,

but we did find one another,
and this isn’t a dream,

and so everyday, I still think
that I’m the luckiest guy in the
world; knowing that it’s true;
because I am.
