The Weight of Choice

The Weight of Choice

written by: Christina Stewart

Two voices fought inside my head,
One soft, like rain on glass,
The other loud, rough, edged,
Like fists pounding on a locked door.

The soft one said, “Stay safe.
Don’t move too fast; you might break.
Hold your breath, keep it small.
Survival is better than the fall.”

But the loud one wouldn’t quit:
“Break it. Tear it down.
Feel every crack and ache.
You’re already drowning, why not fight
For the air you’ve never breathed?”

I stood there, between the two,
Numb with the weight of deciding.
The quiet was choking,
The storm was blinding,
And I couldn’t trust either of them.

I waited, thinking time might choose,
That silence might carry the blame.
But silence only looked me in the eye,
And whispered, “This is yours to claim.”
