These Birds Have Flown

These Birds Have Flown

I once had a bird in the hand.
She wasn’t all that romantic.
But I never knew she could be so nomadic.
It would have to be my sacrifice.
To me, she was the Bird of Paradise.
Now this bird has flown.
She could never be owned.
She could never remain with one
So unlike herself.

That got me thinking
I had a bird of my kind.
Four to be exact.
I haven’t a clue what was in my mind.
But of these beautiful birds of like kind.
I let them all go their own way.
With nothing further to say.

Is it such a surprise
That at my age
I’d find myself in this cage
Of solitaire, so wise,
turns to me to chastise.
Indeed, these birds have flown.
