Throw Line Barometer

written by: Sterling Warner

Walking streets alone at midnight
ringtone blasting “Bad to the Bone”
no time to step under awnings,
answer calls, solicit conversation:
lightning strikes & thunder roars;

caught with neither hat nor umbrella,
rain pelts the sidewalk unremittingly
like bullets shot from gatling guns,
rolling off my balding silver crown
soaking every stitch of clothing,

glancing off sandals, surging over eyestays,
laces, & collars…leaving forecasters who
predicted scattered showers wrong once again
inspiring me to toss darts at microclimate
boards & project future weather myself.
