Tiny Jets

Streaking down from above/behind my line of sight
Bending coordinated into a diving high-speed turn
Five tiny jets do a check-out flyover of the lake
That lies behind my house.

Almost too late they bank and climb, speed
Increasing, they barely miss the tall cottonwoods
That fill the hill across the lake. They turn again,
Flying together out of sight.

Swinging down once more, past my window, full
Flaps, landing gear extended, like a fighter team
They bank and level off, splash down – these
Mallards have come home.
