Your Soul is a River

Your Soul is a River

written by: Janetta Marilyn Konah

Your soul is a natural stream,
With each turn, each twist, it knows
where to go, how to flow
through the torrential emotions that arise
in your emollient bones.

It knows how to sound on the skin of your body.

It knows how to flood out
the anxieties that sit in your veins like blood &
drown every sorrow, shipwreck
every regret sailing across your mind.

What else, if not the soul, knows
how to mend and then, shatter, pull dirt out of you,
to bash through dams of frustrations, crash
and whiplash your fears, choke
every reproach.

What else knows how
to quench thirst?
to bury pains beneath riverbeds
to ply through obstructions
and drag tribulations through the tributaries
that flow from your eyes.

Each bend leads you
through the rapids of life
each channel steered to a better path,
each rotation completes in its upturn.

Your soul, demulcent, is made of water
It holds enough power
to revive your languid form,
has enough salt to salve your scars.

It knows how to cleanse your wounds.
With each ebb tide, it knows
how to calm the chaos in your mind,
rejuvenates your spirit
and fill your heart with hope.

Your soul is a river
that billows at the core of your being.
Hence, when a storm comes raging,
trust that your soul knows how to endure
and then conquer.
