Meeting Death …

Meeting Death …

Death is never a cowboy
hot upon the trail;
he carries too much weight,
not quick with a lasso,
slow & deliberate—

While coffee is brewing
he makes his mark,
his hiss is creepy,
his kiss overpowering.

Always a party-crasher,
he’ll have the last word,
the original Schadenfreuder
who’ll laugh at your demise.

I’ve heard
no one can escape him,
don’t even try.
The latest get-well package
won’t keep y’all alive & thin.

No,
Death’s not a cowboy,
but he’s man enough
(or, is Death a girl?)

No wonder
the kisses are so satisfying—
we are helpless
in Death’s passionate embrace.

But later is better than sooner.
I want to roam these parts
a little longer,
before it’s time to drop.
