Éire 1948

In 1948 we heard,
The beginnings of a distant world
Rising from the rubble
Which untroubled by war would
carry the singers chanting the
focail coróga; “cri de coeur.”
Reminders were etching to the
Fine fetching maidens dancing to the
Éire: banished ills and misdemeanours
We’d sooner believe it to the
Fairy tales and glamour balls
Cast out with the Crown.
A Judas with a gun, casting
Sticks from the embers: “Remember,
The songs of the barren bogs
Beating the Anglified carvings,
Remarking on starting a new island
In the name of the King.”
On Dublin bridge, where a wise man
Still lives, missionaries cast out
Their hats in a prayer to the fallen;
“More again, we will see no more
Again.” To pray ‘a capite ad calcem,’
Never see the likes of these again,
We walked into a declaration of truth.
