Fear of the Known

She lies upstairs in pitch dark, ready for fight or flight, listening to the gentle breath of her child. A kitchen knife lies glinting and sharp under her bottom pillow. A thick wooden door with mortis lock barricades her from the top landing.
There’s a phone on top of the bedside cabinet, an alarm system on all doors and windows.
It’s not as if he didn’t warn her.
“If you leave me, I’ll kill you and your family. I’ll take our child back to my country where no one will ever find her.”
She’s caught a glimpse of him in her rearview mirror on some journeys tailing her, checking she’s still around.
He doesn’t like that she said no.
She lies in pitch dark, ready for fight or flight.
