I Think I Know

I Think I Know

written by: Dickson Shreffler

Why old people die
Giving up is easy
Staying alive is… not
I’m just tired…
I can’t see… Like I once did
I can’t hear… Like I used to
I can’t eat
I can’t swallow
I can’t remember
When I walked everywhere
When I last rode a bike
The phone stopped ringing
Not that I’d ever answer
Card night stopped
Visitors stopped visiting
Days drag on but never change
I can’t remember when
Everything didn’t hurt…still
Holding on to grief
That can’t be comforted
Survivor of course, patient of course
Waiting bravely on until it all to ends…
