Native America

Native America

written by: Robin McNamara

I have obligation to let you speak
the Mojave language.
Lie down heart with no history-
history begin with Washington –
Sitting Bull – no hero –
hero begin with Davy Crockett.

We used your language to defeat Hitler
even though it was dead to us –
zombie drinkers in the reservations
with white man thirst.

I sorry – no motherland for you.
Belong to white face –
milk bottles & newspapers in the dustbowl.

You once have country –
the Great Plains ran with wild borders.
Shame on those who took from your ancestors
who hollered;
“whoo hoo!, whoo hoo!”
now tame like your great-grandpa’s war whoops
in the desert of coyotes.

New America – do not
ask me to be patriotic to the tail
that wags the dog –
The + Anointed + States + of + America.
Bubblegum nation & Coca Cola.

No room for warrior.
