The Difference

Am I
too small
to make a difference?
Maybe.
Maybe not.
If I’m a ripple in the ocean,
I’m propelling other ripples into waves.
I might
be the flutter
of a butterfly’s wings
or the fur
on a bumblebee
that carries the pollen. Maybe I’m
the flicker of a firefly
or the quiet
breeze
on a which a small
loosened leaf takes flight. I
am quiet
in a loud world,
but silence speaks a thousand
words.
I am small
in a large universe,
but a grain of sand is necessary
on even the smallest
beach
and every mountain
begins with a rock. My whisper
can become a roar
in a wind
blowing just right,
or an echo in a deep and dark
tunnel. Maybe
I’m
a plate tectonic
subtly shifting the whole planet
with eruptions and tsunamis. Or maybe…
I’m
the twinkle
of a dying star’s swansong.
What makes me
different?
It doesn’t really matter.
What matters is the difference
I make.
