Masquerade

written by: Gerry Stefanson

which facade today
which adornment to don to play

many to choose from, a planned retreat
many more to create, accepting defeat

they allow for the “day to days”
they maintain reminder, instilling forays

their maintenance surfaces minimal
their presence turning habitual

your mask of play, for act to perform
your robe to disguise, the continual storm

these charades of temperament
these your pre-ordained face of contentment

it’s OK, really and true
these are the tough and rough furrows
that are wrestling/wrangling through

sadly most who share your stage
have little grasp of facade your soul demands
you study and rehearse page by page

surviving a suicide of your child
requires a thousand new roles to engage
a new or reusable mask for each act as compiled/reconciled

here there is no judgment
here there is only temperament
here there is a glimmer of hope/sanity sent.
