Take Me Back
written by: Eliana Furnari
The crescent moon dangles in the midnight sky.
Take me back to crunching leaves under my feet,
clocking my morning steps in the gardens,
and the cool breeze gently brushing my face,
at the top of the freshly mowed hill.
Looking down at the Spirit of Tasmania
on a still grey sea beneath a patchwork sky,
and the You Yangs – a silhouette on the horizon.
Take me back to the smell of fresh bread rising,
drizzled with olive oil and oregano,
crunched in unison at lunch.
Clinking glasses and hearty anniversary congratulations,
the commotion only Italian families can create.
And chatting under the shady verandah,
as we dunk homemade biscuits in granita for dessert.
Take me back to updating the family tree with Dad,
as he reminisces about Sicilian village life,
and the afternoon sun makes way for the moon.
To giggles with siblings in the dark,
when our parents nod off on the couch.
As I close the curtains on the midnight sky,
take me back…
…to Today
