Memories are Forever
written by: Ronnie Villar
It’s worth reminiscing those days that passed
Like an old photograph in my brain suddenly flashed
Flowers in May, rains in June had been passing like songs that rhyme
Forming part of those vivid moments of such nostalgic past.
I hate these million living circuits inside my weary skull
For they seemed to betray memories of you at first sight
Yet still clear in my mind that pineapple you peeled and sliced
The very first fruit I’d seen and tasted, the sweetest perhaps.
Days and nights kept on leaving, switching and changing
Little by little every tick of time knowing you had started to ring
Then had I realized my loving Mama was one of your children
Calling you “Lola” in my innocent young mind was then the beginning.
As different pictures of life gradually portrayed in my mind’s eye
Realizing your sacrifices, hardships you’d had really make me sad
Rearing your offspring not an easy task every chance had to be grabbed
You’d become a “tindera”, “labandera” and a “Metro-Aide” afterwards.
I shall never forget when I was sick and had that terrible cough
Awakened by your gentle tap, we took a joyful ride in a bus
Reaching Manila Bay for the first time the glittering sunrise on the other side
Fresh air comforted my breathing eventually healed my sick air sacs.
Still, I remember that day when I went with you in your street-sweeping job
I was marching with your long magic wand along Dr. Sixto Antonio Ave.
Sweat trickled on your face something had been instilled inside the system of mine
Through you that day the dignity of work etched in my inquisitive mind.
Your concern, your love never faded even when I started my own life
Doomsday, gloomy days you’d been there to give your precious advice
You’d always seemed to know when I was down and out, even when I cried
Seemingly the extension of myself who also felt every beat of my heart.
You left this cruel world unfamiliar of the meaning of the comfort of life
For none of us whom you left had been able to give you that wonderful prize
God knows how hard I tried for you to enjoy the other side of dice
But my weaknesses thwarted my effort of giving you such other ride.
You shall be going to that place, sufferings and hardships have never been known
You shall be relieved at last upon meeting that ALL-KNOWING JUDGE in a throne
You shall be living eternally a kind of life you’d been longing for
Finally vindicated receiving the prize you deserve and a crown of your own.
I shall treasure every leaf, every page of memories we had sewn
Forever, I shall place you in my heart, in my mind, in my soul
Just like my first Boy Scout uniform you bought, brought in our home
Old, worn-out, and now lost yet still clinging to my whole.
Please hear this song of mine as a simple thanks for all your love and care
I know in my simple mind breed as you are like comet is rare
Another flower in May, another rain in June shall surely be here and there
You shall never fade for diamonds as you are, MEMORIES ARE FOREVER.
