FIRST SNOW
written by: Sherry Howard

Darkest days and coldest nights
gray skies chill the bones
until a sprinkling lights the sky
and glee and hope explode
Slamming doors and hurried gait
excitement warms the air
scarves and hats and mittens too
deny the chilly wind
They pack and throw the icy snow
chill air stings their noses
they laugh and romp, make angels wings
and work on snowman poses
Moms and dads and even grans
litter hills with sleds
no school, no work, and no excuses
a pass to play today
When twilight creeps upon the scene
they gather round the fire
prayers of thanks and grateful hearts
for darkest days and coldest nights
