Star Martyr
written by: Trevor Graham
I
Just beyond the orbit
of Jupiter’s 149th moon
Boon
when I began the final burn
“Rock_NJO00027”
concussed the rocket up the side.
The kaleidoscope rays
buried my fate, left me slain.
Human error hurled me down.
TRAJECTORY: crushing clouds
No trumpet horns will mourn,
not a word to console my
plunging soul is numb scorn
of Jupiter’s storm scourge.
I’ll die an actual astronaught
earth-not
forgot
ain’t we all only star-rot?
II
Mun,
Sol here
head consul
of Europa council
my console shows
your ship has blown
we were able to contact
your suit, your trajectory
is tragic, sure you know
Sol,
I’m done
death fills my horizon
doom zooms
as a mere mortal meteor
down my view
go home,
eat food,
love your family.
Leave me to my zoom.
III
“Mun,
be strong.”
my muscles don’t have long
“You lived a long life.”
the timing ain’t right’
“We all die.”
that’s right
“Something good will come of this.”
yes, death
“You will be martyred,
remembered,
honored.”
Mun, Jupiter’s Star Martyr
do not confine my time’s shine
to history’s dirt tomb
i am no marble mortared martyr
we all await the dark yonder
IV
“Sol,
i’ve been stricken
with the terminal illness of gravity
my body will prematurely terminate
in the same inevitable fate
we all await
Sol,
your consoling words
fall short
as i fall into this
cold red hole
hell
Sol,
this is the cold
the hell
the void we can’t avoid
mun,
first human to crush
to freeze
to buckle and bend
at the knees
mun,
first to cower
before the power
of the universe
SOL,
THIS IS MY FINAL VERSE
LAST TRANSMISSION
IT HURTS
MY SKULL
HUMANITY’S HEARSE
IT HURTS
IT HURTS
IT HURTS”
