Winter,
second week of January,
violent wind gusts shaking down the windows,
wailing and whipping
among tall trees and chimneys.

Gloomy dark outside,
fire blazing within,
cheerful flames leaping
from spluttering dry wood,
gleaming from black wainscoting
on all sides.

On the mantle,
many photographs
some old and grim
others graceful and charming.

Blanket over knees,
bodies pressed together comfortably,
a cheerful serving of coffee
on the low table
at our feet.
