Happiness is Seeing You

In a bar, I sat over vodka. I’d pick up women through lonely eyes, promising long conversations and drinks for which I’d pay. It happened there. The last time she smiled, I heard her voice ring through a sigh, crawling chills the length of my spine, breathing her smokey eyes to fog mine, begging her not to let me sleep alone. Yet, here I am in the window, my tears refuse to believe there she was, knocking on the door after midnight. She stood head down, arms crossed in a downpour. Flashes of lightning highlighted the crease of my smile.
