A Fork In The Road

A fork in the road

Last night we went walking
amongst tall pine trees,
all silvery with moon
and shivering with frost.

Icy ground slid under our feet
as the air bit back,
sending our fingers scurrying
in search of synthetic warmth.

Ours was a hopeless sort of hopefulness.
I felt it in the ghost of your gloved touch,
saw it in the glint of moonlight on grass,
tasted it in the tears staining your cheeks.

Last night we went walking
amongst tall pine trees,
until that fork in the road became a left for you
that was right for me.
