After Fifty-Three Years

After Fifty-Three Years, The Sky Remembers

written by: John Neff

Fifty-three years and a silence held tight,
A vacuum of footsteps beneath lunar light,
Since bootprints were pressed into powder and stone,
Then left there to linger—abandoned, alone.

The last human echo that drifted away
Was carried by engines at end of that day,
When Eugene Cernan turned back with a measured last gaze,
And Harrison Schmitt stood witness to history’s phase.

Seventy-three hours they carved in the dust,
Not hurried by time, not weakened by trust,
They walked where no memory previously stayed,
Then sealed it in silence the moment they strayed.

The Pacific received them—the cycle complete,
With fire turned to ocean and triumph discreet,
A splashdown that ended not just a return,
But paused something deeper the world had to learn.

For decades, the Moon watched the Earth from afar,
Unclaimed once again, like a distant old scar,
No footprints renewed, no voices transmitted,
No human ambition returning, committed.

The rockets grew louder, but never that far,
We circled ourselves, never reaching that scar,
Orbit became both a ceiling and cage,
A comfortable boundary masking an age.

Yet something remained in the depth of the sky,
A question unspoken, a reason to try,
A tension between what was done and begun,
A mission unfinished since Apollo had run.

Now engines awaken with purpose restored,
Not chasing the past, but settling a score,
The Artemis name cuts a line through the night,
Not echoing history—but sharpening it right.

Named after the hunter, the sister, the flame,
Artemis carries a different aim,
Not just to return, but to redefine ground,
To prove what was lost can again be found.

She moves through the stars not as myth but as plan,
A calculated ascent, engineered by man,
Where numbers and physics converge into will,
And silence itself is a threshold to fill.

Now four take their place where the vacuum demands,
Not guided by legend—but guided by hands,
Christina Koch carries the distance no human has known,
Breaking the limits once carved into stone.

Reid Wiseman stands at the helm with a steady control,
A measured precision defining the role,
Victor Glover brings flight beyond what was done in the past,
And Jeremy Hansen ensures this expansion will last.

They do not arrive as echoes of old,
Nor shadows of missions already told,
They move as a line that continues the thread,
A future advancing where history led.

Farther than any have traveled before,
Beyond every orbit humanity wore,
They stretch past the boundary Earth once defined,
And redraw the edge of the human mind.

The distance is not just measured in miles,
But in every restraint that lingered in files,
In every delay, every canceled intent,
In every year where the will had been spent.

Now Artemis rises—not softly, not slow,
But with all the weight of the years left below,
A system rebuilt from the lessons of fire,
A mission constructed from dormant desire.

And out in the darkness where nothing will speak,
Where signals take seconds and silence feels deep,
The Moon waits again—not as myth, not as lore,
But as ground humanity left once before.

It remembers the boots, the flags, and the tracks,
The rovers that wandered, the never-turned backs,
It holds every imprint in unbroken stillness,
Untouched by erosion, unchanged in its stillness.

No wind has erased what Apollo once made,
No time has corrupted the marks they displayed,
The surface remains as a record unfrayed,
A ledger of presence that never will fade.

And now, as the engines ignite once again,
The distance between then and now starts to bend,
Not erased—but connected through fire and will,
A mission unfinished—continuing still.

Fifty-three years was never an end,
It was a pause without closure, a line without bend,
And Artemis does not replace what was done,
It completes what began when Apollo had run.

So when they return, and the engines fall still,
And the ocean receives them beyond human will,
It will not be closure—but something more true,
A door reopened, a path breaking through.

Because the sky never forgot how we came,
And the Moon still holds proof we were once the same.
History never concluded that flight—
It paused mid-course… now returning to light.
