Before, a Boy

Remember when the sun shone
cancer free and kissed your bones
with vitamin D and you swang shoeless
as a mockingbird, with painted toes
sketching skies, balanced on a cloud wisp
and dreams were many, for the taking.
Remember when the boys were “icky”
and the schoolgirls snickered at their
awkwardness.

When not writing poetry Emalisa Rose enjoys crafting and birding. She volunteers in animal rescue tending to cat adoptions and cat colonies. She works as a lunch lady in a public school in NYC.
