Carolina

Carolina

written by: Abagail Summers

You remind me of a sunset
back when I used to sit behind the shed
and catch bullfrogs.

Our conversations are like
the pitter-patter on the tin roof,
lingering into the wee hours of the night,
jumping like crickets from one thing to the next.

Dewy grass ruffles in the breeze
as the dandelions sway,
bringing me back to simpler times.

A place where the marigolds bloom,
sprout like newness,
the smell of sweetness in the air,
no care, only you and I among the vast evening sky.

Where stars sparkle
and the moon so big and full,
peels back the darkness surrounding us.

Fresh and alive like the evergreens
that meet the open land,
rolling hills that cascade.

Growth. It never stops.

Development,
paves into bumps and curves,
disappearing wildlife,
tilts the fragile balance
of our love.
