Cosmonaut

capsule
drifting
in the inky
void

remembering
Antonia’s eyes
shut
her hand
nested
in his

the apartment
in Omsk
sleeping through the
train
rumbling
shaking the
walls

cramped capsule
spinning
switches
lights
the sound of
breathing

the cosmonaut
stands in
a field
in Tyver

a lilac sky
the cows he
tended
as a boy
their hides
violet
eating grass

moist from
the dew
on the field
glowing
radiant plum

re-entry
capsule
heating up
34 degrees
teeth gritted
body shaking

he touches his
skin
lavender
expecting
the feel
of ripe
fruit
