Damp River Wall

Damp River Wall

written by: A.T.

My back rests against the damp river wall
The river flows loudly in front of us
Summer is coming to a close
Your leg rests against mine gently
Almost touching.. almost not
You ask me if I’m okay and
I pause, considering what to say
You look up at me with those deep, dark eyes
And I want more than anything in this world
To tell you everything, how I feel about you
But I can’t
So I nod and smile
the concern in your eyes
Leaving me speechless
The way the light casts a soft glow
Across your face as the sun dips
Emphasising the dark shadows
at the nape of your neck
As we sit, leaning against the damp river wall
In this half touching embrace
The truth falls upon me
A harsh, painful truth: love
Or maybe I’m just caught up in the ending of summer
The ending of our time together
Or maybe it is love
Love in all its warmth
Like summer evenings as the sun sets
Down by the Damp river wall
