Grief is a Thorn in My Side

Grief is a Thorn in My Side

written by: Lina Lambert

My weepy eyes stare at the tall vase
Mesmerized by the rose crimson petals
Captivated by the hidden thorns, growing side by side
A delicate curve against a jagged edge

Silk and steel
Smiles and scars
Beauty and the beast – a masquerade
Whisper or scream
Nightmare or dream
Curse or prayer – unspoken despair
Bliss and blame
Flame and frost
Give and take – not all is lost

The vase — half-empty, half-full

Thorns take a bite of blood
Pinching when approached, poking unprovoked
Petals give a peace of beauty,
Soft and demure, clinging and releasing, eventually wilting
Releasing a fragrance that lingers long after the pain has subsided
and the blood has dried.
