Heavy is The Master

Heavy is The Master

written by: Diana Burns

Did you say goodnight gently,
did it all just go black –
Or did you leave with the knowledge
you weren’t coming back?
I’m crying and kneeling
at the foot of a shadow,
choking and chained by an invisible foe.
As these thoughts they imprison
they shatter
they own me.
Heavy is the master we cannot see.
What were you thinking,
as you breathed your last –
Did you think that we failed you
or was it too fast?
I’m crying and kneeling
at the foot of a shadow,
choking and chained by an invisible foe.
As these thoughts they imprison
they shatter
they own me.
Heavy is the master we cannot see.
“Why did you go!”
I shout at the void,
as I dodge the return
of my ricocheting anger.
Thrust and propelled into naught it can see –
it keeps coming back
and battering me.
I’m crying and kneeling
at the foot of a shadow,
choking and chained by an invisible foe.
As these thoughts they imprison
they shatter
they own me.
Heavy is the master we cannot see.
Did you know what was coming,
did you shrink from The Reaper –
Did you pray to a God
you never believed in?
I’m crying and kneeling
at the foot of a shadow…
Heavy is the master we cannot see.
