In Need of All Snow

In Need of All Snow

written by: Tony Ashenden

In the need-all of snow
trapped on the mountain
bitterly cold
holed up
thinking of you

Half out of body in a warmer place
promising over and over
promising
until cold-making pain
opens my eyes

Then walking, stumbling, falling
like a drunkard
head over heels
battered
bloodied and laughing

Painless, eyes fixed, staring
always staring, seeking
destination valley below
Feeling your presence
getting stronger

The biscuit breaking sounds
that my boots make
compressing the snow;
point out
the path unseen

In the need-all of snow it appears
windows half buried in drifts
not a light to be seen
the snow bank deep
‘gainst the cottage door

Climbing over the fence
ever so slowly,
(my damn legs
won’t do
as I tell ‘em)

I shout your name
the sound echoes in my head
muffled sucked into snow;
no wind to carry it
I fear the blizzard has claimed you

With my gloved hands
I tear away
the wall of snow
spent, I fall on the door
crying

then the latch lifts,
the door pulls open
and I fall
into
your ever so white arms.
