My Christmas 101

My Christmas 101

written & performed by: Gerry Stefanson

was my ninth christmas
misty in mind’s eye now
crunch of the snow
not the Captain under foot.

stepping out of Sarbit’s Grocery
Christmas eve, late afternoon.
mom urging father and me to rush
all the cast and crew
boarding our home shortly.

sister would be first with babe in arms
brother with new wife in arms,
uncles, aunts, cousins, friends, neighbours
the odd stray, joining us alone
church something going on.

dad got it, I’m surprised
took a decade or two to grasp it.
change, seasonal magic, peace on earth
the lights, trees, communality, music
I incised on walking home alone, a few miles.

it was spectacular, no life-changing
me, myself, and I
learning what Christmas was,
my puzzle coming together.
