My Father Likes Listening to Old Music

written by: Mayen Kuol Mayen

my father likes listening to old music
music older than his old self by a stretch
music his father danced to in his youth
music his father’s father sang
in the festivities of his days.

he tells me to listen to old music, too:
music older than I am by a stretch
music he danced to in his youth
music his father sang
in the festivities of his days.

“why should I,” once I asked, “& not listen
to the music of my peers as my peers do?”
“the wisdom a man needs for his time
can only be mined in the minds of men
before his time,” he replied.
