New Year’s Day 2022
written by: Christian Ward
A crown of crows
hovers above split
scepters of beer
bottles. Yesterday’s
newspapers are already
bleached of their optimism.
Walking along the High Street,
doorways are full of faces
I haven’t seen before.
Someone will pull a cord
and the faces will change
tomorrow. I passed trees
wearing motion capture suits
of spring buds; the rain
waiting to edit our common hope.
