Once Upon a Child

once upon a time
when i was a child,
i was invincible

once upon a time
when i was a child,
i believed in fairies and Santa

once upon a time
when i was a child,
i dreamt beautiful dreams

then one day

i stopped being invincible
i stopped believing in fairies and Santa
i dreamt nightmares

in that one day

i was robbed of my childhood
my home
my innocence

in that one day

when war started
i was forced to grow up, quickly
and put childish wants aside

in that one day
i became homeless
refugee
someone else

in that one day

convoy i was on,
departed
to the unknown

***

to this day i remember that one day,
it’s burned in my memory, like
an itch you can’t scratch

it’s a reminder that once upon a time

i was a child, invincible
i was a child, believing in unbelievable
i was a child, dreaming beautiful dreams

***

it’s a reminder that once upon a time
i was once upon a child
