Redeeming Love

Erin and Asher meeting
on a dating app
this year wasn’t in Erin’s cards.
But after her friends knew
she was ready for someone new
that’s what happened.

Addison’s Coffee Shop
had people interview dates
over lattes, hoping for more
than a laugh and a free drink.
And now, Erin and Asher
sipped from a cup and
her deep oval green eyes
had him slip over his tongue.
Erin’s eyes danced and softened
with a serene smile.

She slid her hand across the table
and embraced his sweaty palm.
Asher’s heart slowed. “It’s just…”
“First date in a while, huh?” Erin arched a brow
and patted his hand.
Asher winked. “What was the first clue?”

The conversation led
to more than a virtual attraction.
Erin swore that God hated her
for leaving her alone for so long.
Asher thought God had plans
for other people, but
he forgot about Asher.

The truth was further
than it was closer to
mending their hearts
from broken people
who hurt broken people.
The guilt or innocence
their future hinged upon
revealed a fresh start.

Erin lay at night, staring at the ceiling.
How could Asher love her?
She counted reasons that he shouldn’t
until she drifted to sleep in a blessing
of sleeping in his arms.

Asher held his pillow as though it were Erin
who snuggled beside him.
Both slept and rose with a smile
that disturbed their families.
How could they be so happy?
For years, they struggled to get out of bed.

But now, their kids see them kissing,
getting less discrete and more comfortable
kicking the rusty guard of self-preservation
and to work out the details of an ironclad love
with her father walking her down the aisle.
