Release Me

Release Me

written by: Lindsay Soberano Wilson

Release me from the woman
they wanted me to be
Release me of the woman they see
Release me from the woman
dressed in their insecurities
Release me of the woman they see
When they hold their own mirror
in front of me and tell me
to repeat their story of fragility
like a puppet on a string
to suit their agenda
and the narrative
that has infected
critical thinking

There’s no more divergent thinking
and yet conspiracy theories run around with credibility
Everything is debatable
except what’s important to me
Why is it that it’s always okay
to tell me what my story is?
But I should somehow paint my world in their stories?
I am not a colonizer
even though you want me to be…

That is not my story as you colonize my body, heart, mind, and soul…
(But I am a descendant of grandparents who fled their homes due to persecution)

Release me from the woman
they want me to be
Release me of the woman they see
Release me from the woman
dressed in their insecurities
Release me of the woman they see
