The Depths

The Depths

That old ocean vista gives way to a dread gurgle,
a vertiginous descent. You dive deeper than the Mariana Trench,
plumb the depths, muddle through the murky turbidity.

Your ship bound for distant shores ends up mucked in sediment,
strewn as wreckage, a slew of sunken detritus scattered atop the seabed.
You long ago lashed yourself to the mast, never looking aft.
