The Slumber of Youth

The Slumber of Youth

written by: Jessica Dudzinski

I woke from a deep slumber
or so it seemed,
somewhere around my fortieth birthday.
Grey hairs and echoes filled the room
as my mind slowly succumbed to the
unwavering reality.
I was now truly, utterly,
undeniably,
an adult.
The dream of childhood and youth
now bound like an antiquated book,
in cords of heavy leather and
the mocking of crow’s feet,
where so much happiness had once
planted smiles and laughter.
The slumber of youth,
full of wild dreams that we,
indeed I,
believed would one day
be our uncompromised reality.
Though now awake,
I find that daylight upon this old book
is much better in ways
than the slumber of youth
ever was.
