This Small Small World

Clickity-clak clickity-clak
The keyboards click away through the night
Everyone stares furiously into their screens
As we type out our frustrations tap tap tap
Hoping to work our way to success

The weight of the world on our weak shoulders
I wonder who made us the world’s Atlas
As we work and work with all our might
Who is it that it truly benefits
Is it us who take home the salaries,
or those who cut us fat checks?

Great things, everyone around me has done
Making history, reaching newer heights on the daily
But what would happen if it all collapses
Tomorrow before we can stop it
Will the world really cease to be?

I know the paycheck funds the lavish life
I see the benefit of keeping the illusion
That great things begin, wherever we start working
That in this small small world I am a big person
Someone who makes the earth spin.

Try as I might, I cannot ignore
That if tomorrow doesn’t come for me
The world will keep on spinning as it was
The great people will continue to greater things
My presence lost, as if it never was.

I wonder if it crosses others’ minds
The hopelessness of this exercise
Of building and rebuilding every day
A world that often exists only in our minds
And within our screens of virtual reality.

Or is it that this disillusionment of my heart
Comes from a being so wronged
By everyone whom they chose to trust
Abandoned and blamed for many things
They couldn’t figure, try as they must.

Or is my apathy an armour?
A shield to protect my incompetence
And a mind that knows all its failures
Too well that it chooses to ignore
Wanting to reject than be rejected

Would it truly make a difference if
The fear within was abandoned instead.
Replacing it with effort and a little bit
Of hope to tide over the worse of days.
To try and try until the fears all failed.

Will the clickity-claks of apathy
Slowly change to an involvement so deep?
or maybe into a well played game’s genuine glee
While always knowing my place to be
Living in a big big world, a small small me.
