Three Former Lovers

The cat swept my hair tie
Under the couch
Grumbling I reached beneath
Unsure what else I would find
1 dead mouse
2 pieces of cheese
3 former lovers
4 rotting piles I could not identify
The cat stared, her head tilted
For her it was Christmas come early
As she stood ready
To again bat them all out of sight
I braced myself
Reached under again
Knowing that somewhere
I would find some turtle doves
