Who Can You Trust?

Claire insisted we go. She wanted to celebrate Halloween in style. I’m not easily spooked but something about the place made my nape hairs dance.
She laughed at me. ‘It’s cool.’
We stood, gazing at one of the gravestones. Her goading laugh faded.
‘What’s wrong?’
‘Look at the epitaph.’
‘Eh?’
‘The epitaph, damn it, Jerry.’ A shaking finger pointed.

Cut down in the prime of life
The short-handled axe slipped out easily from within the long grass. It sliced neatly through Claire’s skull as I straightened to face her.
‘Man, that’s so cool.’
