Words For Magic
written by: Carol Shamon
I’m searching for other words
for magic
Words that don’t need a cape
words as common as sunrise
as special as birthday
Words with stardust
and cinnamon
and just plain dust
and caves
and grottos
Words like sacred
and religious
and superstitious
Words that bump into someone on the street
that bump
that thump in your heart
a pebble in your shoe
that quick decision
to go this way instead of that
Words like thunderous
and deafening
and whisper
and stillness
Silence
then floating
The word you feel in your body
that’s been planted
and neglected
then watered
then blooms
I've been a poet and journal keeper for most of my life. While in college I contributed to several publications including Colorado-North Review and Poetry-North Review. After college I attended the Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics for two summers studying poetry with Allen Ginsberg and Anne Waldman. Memoir Monday, an online publication, published a personal essay of mine about that experience titled "A Dream A Fish, Allen Ginsberg and Me." In 2020 Irrelevant Press published my zine "A Different More" Creating and Embracing Change While Aging. The zine “Oh The Water” was published the summer of 2023. Finishing Line Press will be publishing my chapbook “Stronger Than Salmon” in August of 2024. I am currently working on my first memoir "The Decade House."
