War On
written by: Anthony John Ward
O’ those were the days,
Way back when
I was a lad
Back then we didn’t have a garden,
We had a yard with high prison walls,
Leading to a back street where the kids would hang out
With the washing strewn between the rows,
Everyone knew who lived in what house
Their doors left open for you to wander in,
When everyone knew what it was like to live without
Brings longing closer to having,
Appreciating all the more you don’t have.
There was no nonsense in the sense we have now.
They dinne na they’re born.
When we were biarns we had nowt and would want for nothin’.
Now they have it all an’ it’s not enough.
We ‘ad to eat what was put in front of us,
There was nun o this I don’t want that,
We did what we were told, or else.
Ye wouldn’t dare answer back,
You knew yer place an’ you respected yer elders.
There’s ne respect now,
Kids these days are runnin’wild,
And nobody dare say a word.
When I was a lad,
You made yer own fun and’ it cost nothin’
You’d be out from morning ‘till yer mother hollered ya in for tea,
And you’d all gather round the radio and listen together,
Not what’s ees facin’ each other in their rooms on those bloody phones.
I remember havin’ to go to the phone box at the end of the street,
And borrow books from the library,
Things were more civilised than they are now,
Back when there was war on.
