That Foreign Plays her Mistress Stroke
written by: Stephen Kingsnorth
The Bible, Matthew 15.27
‘Yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from the master’s table.’
A mother hidden, history,
unlikely in a mission tale;
religious leader put in place
as challenged in his strategy.
The wit to play, “Messiah” ground,
to give as given in the round,
in self-abasement for her girl,
a stereo for sake of child.
They may say ‘puppy’ for the dogs
to soften implied insult served,
but she is shifting baseline laid,
for protest – strategy indeed.
A power play, theology,
this woman rewrites history,
the subtle ’gainst claimed overwhelm,
a sign of foreign commonweal.
The ‘chosen’ – TV news each day –
illumined on this long past day,
recorded for posterity,
to shake and shape his story’s take.
So mix and match when set in ways –
your banquet crumbles to the floor;
for all have manifesto place –
so hear O Israel, Palestine.
