crude tattooed right fist spells HATE
across knuckles eyes daring comment
from strangers in the full visitors room
wheel chaired sleeping mother sighs
as he whisps a stray hair from her eyes
with his left hand labeled LOVE
gently touches his lips to her cheek
smiles shyly at new friends in the room
Carl “Papa” Palmer of Old Mill Road in Ridgeway, Virginia, lives in University Place, Washington. He is retired from the military and Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) enjoying life as “Papa” to his grand descendants and being a Franciscan Hospice volunteer.
